Hysterectomy

Description: Hysterectomy is a procedure which involves the surgical removal of the uterus (womb). It can also involve the removal of the fallopian tubes, ovaries and cervix. Following this operation women no longer have periods, are no longer fertile and cannot bear children.

There are two main ways to perform a hysterectomy. The most common way is to remove the uterus through a cut in the lower abdomen, the second, less common way, is to remove the uterus only through a cut in the top of the vagina. In certain cases combinations of the two methods are also employed. Each operation lasts between one to two hours and is performed under a general anesthetic.
