Robotic Myomectomy vs. ExAblate Treatment for Uterine Fibroids

Robotic Myomectomy and ExAblate: Uterine Fibroid Treatment Comparison

There are a number of treatment options for uterine fibroids. One of the newest treatments is robotic myomectomy.

ExAblate is a medical device that lets your doctor be able to see inside your body, locate your symptomatic uterine fibroids and precisely treat them, all without surgery.

Robotic Myomectomy Facts

Robotic Myomectomy is a relatively new procedure which uses robotic instruments to remove fibroids while leaving the uterus intact. It uses small incisions but is still an invasive surgery.
It does not always eliminate the need for abdominal myomectomy. When there are very large myomas and/or many myomas an abdominal myomectomy may be required.

ExAblate Treatment Facts

ExAblate is a commercially approved for treating Uterine Fibroids using MR guided Focused ultrasound.
More than 6500 women have already undergone this non-invasive procedure.

What are the Risks of Having a Robotic Myomectomy?

Most women do not have health problems during or after the surgery, but some of the risks of a myomectomy include:
• Abdominal pain
• Risk of wound infection
• Risk of blood loss
• Uterine adhesions (scar tissue in the uterus) which may contribute to miscarriages.

What are the Risks of the ExAblate Treatment?

ExAblate is a non-invasive procedure which doesn’t require any incisions to be made. This eliminates the risk of infection and other serious complications often resulting from invasive surgeries.

However, as with any medical procedure, there are risks involved. You may experience:
• Some abdominal pain - similar to that experienced during menstruation
• Cramping
• Nausea
• Vaginal discharge
• Shoulder, leg or back pain - from lying still during the procedure

As with any procedure, there is a risk that the treatment may not be successful and you may require an alternative treatment.

The incidence of these complications is relatively low.
